Pathogen Testing

All varieties introduced into tissue culture at the Ithaca lab are tested for a the following pathogens:

  • Pathogen Tissue TubesPotato spindle tuber viroid (PSTVd)
  • Potato virus A (PVA)
  • Potato virus M (PVM)
  • Potato virus S (PVS)
  • Potato virus X (PVX)
  • Potato leafroll virus (PLRV)
  • Potato latent virus (PotLV)
  • Potato Mop Top Virus (PMTV)
  • a general potyvirus test
  • the bacteria Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. sepedonicus (Cms)
  • Pectobacterium atrosepticum (=Erwinia carotovora subsp. atroseptica or Eca)
  • With general growth media for bacteria and fungi

Once transferred to the Uihlein Farm, the materials are retested for:

  • PSTV
  • PVA
  • PVM
  • PVS
  • PVX
  • PVY
  • PLRV
  • Cms
  • Eca
  • With general growth media for bacteria and fungi

All potato varieties distributed are from pathogen-tested stocks. The materials are guaranteed as pathogen-tested, not pathogen-free, but we have never observed any undetected pathogens in our distributed planting stocks.
